What goes on a company stamp?

One of the first questions after registering a new company in Hungary: what should go on the company stamp (cégbélyegző)? Here is what is most common, and what to check before ordering. The stamp text itself stays in Hungarian, exactly as in the company register.

The most common content

  • Company name (cégnév) – exactly as in the company register (the full or the short name).
  • Registered seat (székhely) – postcode, town, street, house number.
  • Tax number (adószám) – 8-1-2 digits, for example 12345678-2-42.

Many companies also add the company registration number (cégjegyzékszám, “Cg.”), the bank account number, a phone number or an e-mail address. The more details you add, the larger the size you should choose.

Examples

Three-line stamp (smaller size):

Minta Kft.
1076 Budapest, Garay tér 2/3.
Adószám: 12345678-2-42

Five-line stamp (larger size):

Minta Kereskedelmi Kft.
1076 Budapest, Garay tér 2/3.
Adószám: 12345678-2-42
Cg. 01-09-123456
Bankszámla: 12345678-12345678-12345678

Is a company stamp mandatory?

Hungarian law does not generally require a company stamp. It is required, however, if the company has stated that it signs with a stamp (for example on the signature specimen, aláírási címpéldány). In practice many banks and business partners expect one, and it speeds up everyday paperwork.

What to check before ordering

  • Copy the company name and tax number from the company extract or the registration decision, so there are no typos.
  • For a new company it is worth waiting for registration: the tax number and registration number become final then.
  • A Hungarian bank account number has 2×8 or 3×8 digits; if you change banks later, the stamp has to be replaced too – which is why many leave it out.
  • Check in the designer’s preview that every line is easy to read.
